Whiplash injury occurs when the body, head, neck, spine, react with hyperextension or hyperflexion of the neck during a decelerating or accelerating force.
One of the most common injuries in car accidents, whiplash occurs most often because there is not adequate time for the muscles to brace.
Simple and relatively uncomplicated cases of whiplash result from sprained or strained ligaments of the neck. Once sprained, the muscles will naturally spasm as a protective mechanism. Whiplash pain may manifest as a stiff neck and can travel down one arm or both arms.
Relief for a basic and simple case of whiplash can often be attained with chiropractic adjustment, pain medication, physical therapy and a supportive, soft neck collar.
A more severe case of whiplash is indicated by prolonged and persistent pain that may last for a month or longer. This extended period of pain may indicate that nerves were trapped or more extensively damaged by the whiplash event. Severe whiplash may also result in the ruptured discs in the neck that are somewhat like the herniated disc, slipped disc or ruptured disc that can occur in the back.
Additional symptoms such as pain that radiates into the shoulder, elbow, hand or wrist, headache or low back pain and more may occur after a car-accident whiplash.
[San Diego whiplash and neck pain] The superior results from the use of chiropractic care for patients suffering from long term whiplash was reported in an article published in the Journal of Orthopedic Medicine in 1999.

In the 1999 study, the authors interviewed patients with chronic whiplash in 100 consecutive chiropractic referrals.
Study results indicated that of the 93 patients who stayed in the study, 74% (or 69 of the 93) experienced improvement.
