If your world has come to resemble a sickening ride on an out-of-control carousel, you may be suffering from a condition known as vertigo. These feelings of dizziness and disorientation can stem from problems with your upper cervical alignment and a part of the inner ear known as the vestibular system. Fortunately, The Running Doctor can help stop all that spinning by offering safe, effective, non-surgical vertigo treatments in San Diego.
Vertigo is one of the many conditions that can produce dizziness and nausea. But not all dizziness is vertigo. You can experience dizzy spells from such diverse causes as alcohol, medications, extremely high or low blood pressure, low blood sugar and anxiety. Vertigo is more specifically related to an upset in your head's positional detection mechanism, the vestibular system. It also produces a specific sensation -- that either you or the world around you is spinning uncontrollably.
The vestibular system is a complex system that includes two chambers, the utricule and saccule, housed inside a larger structure called the vestibule. The utricle and saccule detect vertical orientation and linear movement, while three fluid-filled semicircular canals attached to the vestibule detect rotation. Tiny bits of calcium debris can migrate from other parts of the ear into the canals, creating a false sense of rotation. Vertigo can also be associated with an imbalance in the way your head sits on the top of your spinal column. If the skull is even slightly angled instead of level, the fluid in the semicircular canals may also be sufficiently off balance to cause vertigo.
Vertigo can be genuinely debilitating -- in fact, runners who are troubled by it shy away from the sport they love because the bumping and jostling aggravates their condition. If that sounds all too familiar, come visit our chiropractor in San Diego. Dr. Jeffers can evaluate your upper cervical alignment to see whether you might benefit from small, gentle adjustments that can literally set your head on straight. (These evaluations can also help us rule out other possible causes of your dizziness, disorientation or nausea that might require other forms of care).
If debris in the inner ear is the culprit, our San Diego chiropractor can show you how to perform Brandt-Daroff exercises. These exercises involve lying on one side an then the other, alternating with periods of sitting upright, to settle the debris. We may also administer a positional treatment called the Epley manuever.
