Symptoms and Types of Running Injuries

Patient in San Diego running with runner's knee and in need of chiropractic care

If your running career or hobby has been sidelined due to pain, stiffness and other symptoms, you need to find out what's happening in your body, what caused it and what you can do to heal yourself of it so you can get back yourself back on track. At times like this, your best bet is an appointment with Jeffers Chiropractic & Sports Injuries. Our chiropractor, Dr. Keith Jeffers, has more than 25 years of experience as an expert in running injuries and other kinds of sports injuries. He's helped runners at every level of achievement with all types of running injuries -- and he can help you.

While it's certainly possible to sustain a traumatic injury while running (by tripping and falling, for example), most such sports injuries are related to overuse and soft tissue strain. Some causes of overuse injuries are extrinsic, having to do with external factors such as the surface you run on, your shoe quality and reactions to cold or cold weather. Other causes are intrinsic, stemming from problems with your alignment, stance, gait, leg length, joint health, conditioning and other physical variables.

Types of Running Injuries

Some of the more common -- and unpleasant -- running injuries include:

  • Runner's knee - Patellofemoral pain that strikes just below the kneecap
  • Shin splints - Pain caused by strained muscles in the lower legs
  • ITBS - Iliotibial band syndrome, an inflammation of the tendon that runs from the hip to the knee
  • Plantar fasciitis - A painful inflammation of the plantar fascia that runs along the sole of the foot to the heel and supports the arch.
  • Achilles tendonitis - Tendon inflammation that causes pain where the Achilles tendon meets the heel.

Running Injury Treatment at Our San Diego Injury Clinic

Our San Diego injury clinic offers natural, non-surgical, drug-free forms of running injury treatment that address not just your symptoms but also their underlying causes. The nature of the complaint often suggests an underlying biomechanical problem. for instance, both shin splints and ITBS may be caused or aggravated by overpronation of the foot, while Achilles tendonitis, which is associated with tight calf muscles, may also be related to a heel (calcaneus) misalignment or other musculoskeletal balance problem. We can administer a detailed evaluation to check for misalignment issues that might be creating multiple problems. We then administer running injury treatments such as:

  • Massage therapy to loosen tight calves and relieve muscle pain
  • Laser therapy to relieve pain and inflammation while speeding the healing process
  • Posterior calcaneus adjustment to correct the source of Achilles tendonitis
  • Orthotics to treat shin splints and plantar fasciitis by providing the feet with better cushioning and arch support
  • Spinal adjustments to correct your balance and weight distribution on weight-bearing joints
  • Toe raises and other strengthening exercises to help the leg muscles rehabilitate themselves and resist future injury
